The General Tire and Rubber Company was founded in 1915 by William O’Neil and Winfred E. Fouse in Akron, Ohio, the rubber capital of the world. General Tire entered a booming market with over 300 competitors, so O’Neil and Fuse bypassed the original equipment (OE) market and moved straight on to focus on producing a quality replacement tire.

An early tire that General Tire released was the General Balloon Jumbo, a pneumatic truck tire that required only 12 pounds of air pressure. In 1955, General Tire entered the passenger car OE tire market as the tire supplier for General Motors.
